ChemTube 3D

ChemTube3D contains interactive 3D animations and structures, with supporting information for some of the most important topics covered during an undergraduate chemistry degree.

Client Overview

ChemTube3D is a web-based interactive educational platform developed and hosted by the University of Liverpool. It provides interactive 3D animations and molecular structures with supporting explanatory content for key topics in advanced school chemistry and undergraduate degree-level chemistry. ChemTube3D enables students and educators worldwide to visualise complex molecular geometries, reaction mechanisms, and structural chemistry concepts in three dimensions.

Project Goal

The goal of ChemTube3D is to support and enhance the teaching and learning of chemistry by helping users visualise abstract chemical structures and dynamic reaction mechanisms that are difficult to grasp through static images or text alone. Rather than being a commercial product, ChemTube3D positions itself as a free Open Educational Resource (OER) aimed at students, lecturers, and practising chemists across the globe.

Challenges

Traditional chemistry education often relies heavily on 2D representations, diagrams of organic mechanisms or ball-and-stick drawings of molecules, which can make it hard for learners to grasp 3D spatial relationships, orbital shapes, and dynamic processes like reaction pathways. ChemTube3D was conceived to:

  • Overcome static learning limitations by enabling interactive exploration.
  • Make structural and mechanistic concepts intuitive through real-time animations and manipulable 3D models.
  • Provide free access to high-quality visualisations to support education irrespective of institution or location.
My Solution

ChemTube3D achieves its educational mission by integrating several key features:

Interactive 3D Visualisations
  • Users can rotate, zoom, and manipulate molecular structures and animations directly in their browser.
  • Reaction mechanisms are shown with animated arrows and models that illustrate bond breaking and forming in real time, bringing textbook reaction steps to life.
Comprehensive Content Coverage
  • The platform covers a broad range of topics relevant to undergraduate chemistry curricula, including:
  • Organic Chemistry: reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry.
  • Structure and Bonding: orbital shapes, molecular geometry, and electron distributions.
  • Inorganic Chemistry & Materials: crystal structures, bonding frameworks, and coordination chemistry.
  • A-Level and Introductory Topics: foundational concepts for pre-university learners.
Supporting Educational Material

Each interactive component is paired with informational text that explains the concept, guiding students through what they’re seeing and why it matters. This supports self-directed learning and complements classroom lectures.

Accessibility & Open Licensing

ChemTube3D is freely available under a Creative Commons licence, ensuring that the resource can be accessed, shared, adapted (within licence terms), and incorporated into teaching without cost barriers.

Conclusion

ChemTube3D represents a significant advancement in chemistry education by combining interactive 3D visualisation with explanatory learning content. Its open access philosophy and educational depth have made it a go-to resource for students and educators alike, helping users better understand some of the most challenging concepts in organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. Through its engaging, hands-on approach, ChemTube3D continues to bridge the gap between textbook theory and visual intuition, supporting chemistry learning on a global scale.
