The Portobello Bookshop

An independent bookshop based in Edinburgh’s seaside community of Portobello.

Client Overview

The Portobello Bookshop is an independent bookshop located in the seaside community of Portobello, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland. Since opening in July 2019, the shop has become a local favourite for readers of all ages thanks to its warm, welcoming atmosphere, well-curated book selection, and vibrant community events programme. It stocks a diverse range of fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, signed editions, and special collections, and also operates an online shop offering delivery and in-store collection options.

Project Goal

The goal for The Portobello Bookshop website was to create a digital presence that reflected the charm and personality of the physical store, while offering a user-friendly online experience for browsing and purchasing books, discovering events, and learning about the shop’s ethos. The site needed to:

  • Showcase the extensive book catalogue and special editions
  • Provide details on in-store and online events
  • Encourage both local and remote engagement
  • Support easy updates by the bookshop team
Challenges

The project required balancing several key factors:

  • Diverse online catalogue: With millions of titles available through the shop’s inventory, the website needed a structure that made browsing easy and inviting.
  • Community identity: Portobello is known for its local character, and the website needed to communicate this sense of place and community alongside the bookshop’s unique personality.
  • Event promotion: The shop regularly hosts author talks, readings, and other book-related events, which required clear promotion and scheduling on the site.
  • User experience: Creating an online space that felt as inviting as the physical store, with intuitive browsing, search, and purchase flows.
